Thurrock International Celebration of Culture

Thurrock International Celebration of Culture

On Saturday 8th July, Thurrock came together as one and celebrated culture and diversity through music, song, dance, art and performance as Thurrock International Celebration of Culture held their 2nd Pop Up Microfest. The sun was shining and we kicked off with some amazing jazz with Adam Holdsworth on the saxophone quickly followed up by Rajesh from the Thurrock Asian Association who gave us a few classic songs from Bollywood.

Just as “Thurrock 100 Tales” walking festival arrived carrying their flags. They were joined by the Mayor of Thurrock, Councillor Tunde Ojetola who said, “Celebrate our culture and celebrate our Thurrock as our motto is ‘By the Thames to all the World’.” Next up the multitalented local theatre troop, Complete Commedia Co, who performed an original piece of bawdy street theatre. Local choir, Golden Voices provided some truly lovely singing and were a big hit with the crowd, while Thurrock artists held their ever popular paint-off.

Rob Groves from Riverside Community Big Local (who have launched a number of community events in Grays that includes the café at Grays Beach to helping set-up a music studio) said, “He was proud to sponsor this event.” Love Grays were also thanked for their support in promoting the festival.

The Nepalese Dancers who were the highlight from last year were back again to provide some truly beautiful dancing and pulled in a huge crowd. We had two original female singers, Nicola Collis and Nefertitan showcasing their completely different genres. As we headed towards the end of the festival the audience were delighted to watch a tap and ballet performance from one of our local dance schools. Finally, Temple Springs Music School provided the perfect ending to the day with the next generation of talent.

TICC Chairman Neil Woodbridge said, “We didn’t think we could top last year, but we did. There was something for everybody as we came together to celebrate the wonderful diversity and talent that exists here in Thurrock.”
