Christmas Switch On 2019

Christmas Switch On 2019

The annual Christmas Lights Switch On lit up Grays High Street to mark the start of the festive season, transforming it into a festive wonderland with music, fun and yule tide treats!

This year we really wanted to highlight and showcase the wealth of talent within the community. We had a fabulous line up of local artists, schools and groups who all performed on the main stage, dancing and singing their hearts out to the people of Grays.

We want to say a huge thank you to our spectacular sponsors, this fantastic community event wouldn't have been possible without your support!

The Love Grays team arrived bright and early ready to start setting up for the big day ahead, spreading some festive joy with plenty of tinsel to go around!

Festivities began at 2pm with an all singing, all dancing Christmas extravaganza!

Check out all the talented artists that took to the stage during the event:

Children were encouraged on the day to get creative, making their very own Christmas cards and snowflakes at the Arts & Crafts station managed by local artists Kara Thompson & Preeti Tak, every child that took part could enter into a FREE raffle where they could win a choice of 4 hampers filled with festive treats and a cuddly Frozen 2 toy! Loads of families returned to the Arts & Crafts station for the raffle prize draw as we (with help from the children) drew the winning tickets. Congratulations to our 4 winners!

Tudor Markets spread their own Christmas magic over the market, with delicious street food (including Chinese and Thai), festive treats (including German chocolate kisses, donuts and waffles) and even the opportunity to cross a few presents off your list with a tombola and lucky dip stall! They even had a prosecco bar complete with mulled wine and hot chocolate.

After their popularity last year, we brought back the wonderful walkabout entertainers. Each costume was designed and created by local artists and costume apprentices Emily Moon & Cristina Bodolan along with The Anglo Asiatic Arts & Heritage Alliance (AAAHA), funded by local sponsorship, supporting local people to develop their skills - Amazing!

It wouldn't be Christmas without Santa Claus! Children were able to visit his grotto inside Grays Shopping Centre. They even got the opportunity to bring a piece of the magic home with a souvenir photo of the moment.

As the sun went down, excitement began to bubble as the big moment was approaching. We welcomed the cast of this year's panto at Thameside Theatre, Dick Whittington, Luke Coldham and Alice Fillary to the stage along with the big man Santa Claus who pushed the plunger and cast Grays into festive cheer complete with a spectacular flurry of snow!

If you couldn't make it to this year's event don't worry, you can still get into the Christmas spirit by checking out our live videos and photos from the event on our Facebook page. If you did come along, we hope you had as much as we did, don't forget to tag yourself, your friends, schools and groups in any of the photo's on our page.
