Christmas Switch On 2018

Christmas Switch On 2018

Grays High Street was transformed into a magical winter wonderland filled with music, dancing and festive fun for the whole family, as the festive season officially sprung to life at the Love Grays Christmas Switch On last Saturday.

We called upon a whole host of local and national celebrities to make this year’s event the biggest and best ever with headline acts from X-Factor 2017 finalist Matt Linnen and The Voice Kids 2018 stars, to the cast of Thameside Theatres pantomime Aladdin, Dan Osborne and Ben Jardine of The Only Way is Essex, Christmas was officially launched in Grays.

The festivities kicked off at 12pm with incredible performances from Chafford Voices, Creative Blast, Thameside Young Producers and South Essex Colleges Theatre and Dance students who blew us away with high energy performances and mind blowing vocals.

At 2pm the Magic Carpet Trail princesses arrived to meet all the boys and girls, plus FREE face painting, arts & crafts and selfie stations to help keep the parents entertained, all building up to the finale of the magic carpet trail where children could meet the big man himself, Santa Claus!

(Don’t forget, you can check out your photos with Santa on the Grays Shopping Centre Facebook page for a chance to win a £25 shopping voucher)

The businesses in Grays were abuzz with excited shoppers hunting down the hearts in our Love Grays Heart Trail, promising one lucky shopper a chance of winning £400 in cash!

As the elves frolicked and the people sang, it was soon time for our headlines acts. First up to the stage was The Voice Kids 2017 winner Jess Folley, followed shortly by Unify, and The Voice Kids 2018 finalists Kobi and Charlie Dillon! Finally to end the days amazing entertainment was 2017 X-Factor finalist Matt Linnen, who also celebrated his birthday on stage with the people of Grays.

The magic and excitement was tangible at the event as the switch on was about to begin. We welcomed our sponsors and the cast of Thameside Theatres pantomime, Aladdin onto the stage along with Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Barbara Rice, who together plunged Grays into festive cheer, illuminating the high street and sending snow amongst the crowds. Cllr Barbara Rice had this to say about the event:

This is always an incredibly special event and it was wonderful to see so much festive spirit in the air.

"The entertainment was excellent, the town centre looked superb and it was a real honour to be asked to switch on the Christmas lights.

"I wish all of our residents a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.”
